Date of Service: September 2025
Location: Santa Monica, CA (90405)
Appliances: Maytag Washer & Dryer Stack
Technicians: Yotam (Washer Repair), Joel (Dryer Service)

The Situation

A customer in Santa Monica contacted us to service a stacked Maytag washer and dryer. The washer had stopped draining properly, and Yotam was dispatched to diagnose the issue.

Upon inspection, Yotam identified a failed drain pump in the washer. He replaced the defective component, verified proper operation, and tested both the washer and the dryer to confirm everything was functioning normally.

Before completing the visit, Yotam offered the customer an annual maintenance service for the dryer — including internal lint cleaning and safety inspection. Because the dryer sits directly above the washer, airflow is more restricted, making annual cleaning even more important. The customer declined the service at that time.

The Call Back – One Week Later

Roughly a week later, our office received a call from the same customer. The dryer had stopped working and smelled like smoke.

Joel was dispatched to inspect the dryer. During his evaluation, he found that significant lint buildup inside the dryer cabinet — around the heating element, blower housing, and wiring — had caused the unit to overheat. The smell was the result of lint beginning to scorch inside the appliance.

While the dryer could be repaired, the issue and the associated cost could have been avoided entirely through preventative maintenance.

The Lesson

Preventative maintenance is one of the most effective ways to prevent dryer fires and costly breakdowns.
Even when a dryer vent appears clean, lint can accumulate inside the machine itself, especially near the heating components.

When neglected, that trapped lint can overheat and ignite. In this case, what began as a simple maintenance suggestion could have saved the homeowner from a dangerous situation — and potential fire damage.

Regular dryer maintenance helps:

  • Prevent dryer fires
  • Maintain airflow and performance
  • Extend the life of your appliance
  • Reduce unexpected repair costs

What We Recommend

For stacked laundry units and dryers located in tight spaces, we recommend:

  • Annual internal lint cleaning performed by a qualified technician
  • Checking for early warning signs — such as burning smells, excessive heat, or long drying times
  • Scheduling professional inspection every 12 months, or sooner for households with frequent laundry use
